Nothing, entry is free.

What are the size restrictions for original work?
2d works: unframed work may be submitted to the award but must conform to the following when framed for exhibition: w:200cms x h: 200cm maximum
3d works: there are no size restrictions for free-standing 3d works. Sharp or unstable works will be excluded on grounds of health safety. Fragile 3d works to be displayed inside cased plinths for exhibition must conform to the following: w:50cm x d:50cm xh:100cm maximum. Electric works (other than battery powered) are not accepted.

Can I enter an unframed work?
Yes.
The winning work will be framed by West End Gallery.

Can I enter an artist's book?
Yes, artist’s books are permitted; it will be displayed in a case provided by the museum.

Can I enter an audio-Visual work?
No, we do not have the facilities to display this in our exhibitions, so audio-visual works cannot be entered.

Can I enter a fragile work?
Yes, the museum will provide a cased plinth.

Can I enter a diptych/triptych?
Yes, provided the works when framed and displayed occupy the same area as the allowance for a single work.

Can I enter a collaboration with another artist?
Yes, but you and the other artist/s cannot also enter as individuals. If you win a prize, it will be equally divided between the collaborating artists.

Can I enter a site-Specific work?
Yes. Site-specific work can be entered by submitting photographs of the original artwork in location. This can be of single or multiple images and the photograph/s of the site-specific work must be no larger than 200 x 200 cm maximum when framed for exhibition. An artist statement must be included with your submission.

Can I enter a giclee or photographic print if my works goes through to the 2nd stage?
No. All artwork must be in its original form. Original artist’s prints are accepted, but not giclee or other photographic reproductions.

Can I enter a photograph?
Yes, providing this is the original form of the artwork.

Can I enter using an psuedonym?
Yes, students can enter using a pseudonym. Your full name must also be provided to authenticate your entry with your college or university.

Do I write about myself or my work in the artists statement?
You can write whatever you wish. You can write solely about your work, or yourself as an artist, or a combination of both of these.

How much can I write in my artist statement?
Up to 300 words.

How will I know whether I have been shortlisted?
We will send you an email.
The short-list will be posted on the LSA website on Tuesday 2 August 2016.

What happens if I am shortlisted from the first round of judging?
If your work is shortlisted from the digital images, you will be asked to deliver your original work to the West End Gallery in Leicester. More information can be found in the section regarding the “Information for Shortlisted Students” below.

What is the entry process for the first round of judging?
First, you must apply for the Student Award 2016 on our website by filling in the Application Form. Please include a short statement about your work. You will be able to upload images of your work at a later stage.
Press the 'Submit' button to send us your application.
You will shortly receive an email confirming that we have received your application. At the top of the email is your unique Reference number. There is also a link on the email to view your application.
When you tap the link, you must enter your email address and the Reference number you have been given.
You will now see the information that you entered on the application form. You can now upload up to images (maximum 3MB per image) separately at any time. You can also add a title and a short description of up to 250 characters. Please be aware that once loaded, the images cannot be changed.
We suggest you bookmark our email so that you will be able to return to your application to upload your images if you don't want to upload them now.
The deadline for submitting the application online and uploading digital images of your work, is midnight (GMT) on 29 July 2016.

If I am shortlisted, do I have to frame my work before bringing to West End Gallery?
No.
However, the winning work will have to be framed for exhibition within the specified size limit.

When will the prize be announced?
The winner and runners-up will be notified immediately after the judgment has been made on Wednesday 31 August 2016.
The announcement will appear on the LSA website on Thursday 1 September 2016.

Can I remove my work before the end of the exhibition?

Who can enter?
You must be a student currently in full or part-time education in Leicestershire or Rutland studying a foundation or degree course in any art or design discipline.

Can I apply if I am on a course something other than either a foundation or degree course?
No

Can I apply if I am living in the area but studying outside Leicester or Leicestershire?
No

Is there any age limit for applying for the award?
No.

Can I still apply for the award after my course has ended?
Yes, you can. If you studied on your course at any time during 2016 you are eligible to apply, even if the course has completed during the year.

How many photographs can I enter?
2-D works require one image.
3-D works must have two images uploaded, showing the work from different angles.

What are the requirements for submitting digital photographs?
Each image should be no bigger than 3MB.
Your original digital photographs should be a minimum of 1500 pixels width / 1500 pixels height.

Can I change a photograph after I have supplied it?
No. We are working on improving this, so please visit this question again.

Should I supply the size of the actual (unframed) artwork?
Yes

Can I enter a note about my photograph?
Yes. There is an optional space to add very short note with each photograph uploaded (maximum 250 characters including spaces).

What is the judging process?
There are two stages:
- In the first round, the Selection Committee will convene on 1 August 2016 and all submissions will be judged from digital images submitted shown on a large, high definition screen.The shortlist will announced on our website on Tuesday 2 August.
- If you are shortlisted, you will be contacted and invited to deliver your original work to West End Gallery between 25 - 27 August 2016 ready for the 2nd round.
- The second round selection takes place at West End Gallery on Wednesday 31st August 2016. A single overall winner will be chosen, with two runners up. The results will be announced on our website on Thursday 1 September 2016.
- The winner and two runners up will be contacted and given information about delivering work to New Walk Museum & Art gallery.

Can I appeal if I do not win or am not shortlisted?
No. The Selection Committee's decision is final.

Can somebody else bring in my work to the West End Gallery?
Yes.

Yes, provided we have your written authorisation that they may do so.

Is there a preferred type of frame for artwork?
All frames must be of acceptable standard.
Metal and clip frames are not allowed as mirror plates will be used to secure the work to the wall.

If I am shortlisted, when can I bring my works into West End Gallery?
Shortlisted students should bring their works into West End Gallery, 107 Highcross Street, Leicester LE1 4PH at any of these times:
Thursday 25 August: 9.00am - 4.30pm
Friday 26 August: 9.00am - 4.30pm
Saturday 27 August: 9.00am - 1.30pm (closed in afternoon)It is not necessary to frame works.

Information for the Winning Student

Will you help with framing my work for the exhibition?
Yes. The winning work, at the specified size, will be framed and cost covered by West End Gallery, in collaboration with the winning student.

Does a drawing have to be framed?
Yes. Other works such as watercolours and prints must be framed behind glass.
The winning work will be framed by West End Gallery as part of the prize.

Does an oil or acrylic work on canvas board or panel have to be framed?
No, it does not have to be framed. Box canvases and panels must be of reasonable standard, not bowed or out of square. They may be framed or unframed. If unframed, the sides must be clean and well presented with no visible studs, tacks or staples.

Will you provide a plinth for 3-D work?
Yes

My work is fragile, can you provide a cased plinth to protect it?
Yes. Please see the restrictions on sizes under 'What you may submit'.

Can I enter a giclee or photographic print of my original work?
No. All artwork must be in its original form. Original artist’s prints are accepted, but not giclee or other reproductions. The only exception is site-specific works, which may be represented by photographs.
