I am an interdisciplinary artist, working in both 2-D and 3-D and utilising different media, depending on the theme to which I am responding. Drawing always underlies my practice, both in preparatory sketches for projects and often as finished pieces. Materiality is central to my way of working – the way paint an be manipulated on the surface, its properties and interactions, for example, or how clay, fabric, organic material or other media can be used to form my response to a particular subject.
Recurring themes include presence and absence, memory, fragmentation, holding on to the past and always the sense that being human can often be a solitary and contemplative experience. The objects or subjects within my work are always a metaphor or vehicle to express these feelings - the lone bird facing the viewer, the woman looking out to the world through a small window, the resolute face in a portrait and so on.
