My love of the countryside began as a child learning the names of wild flowers and birds on walks with my mother in the Norfolk countryside. Much of my work focuses on the themes of nature, folklore and history with detailed visual research and written notes being an important part of the design process. I then use the research to create drawings and designs for print. I am fascinated with lettering and text and often include the words from poems or folklore sayings into my work as a link to the research themes or as design elements.
In my prints and textile pieces I explore pattern, texture and rich colours in intricate design layouts. As well as illustrative detailed lino prints often combining several plates with chine colle, I develop textile pieces which combine layered mono prints and screen prints with machine and hand embroidery.
I am currently working on a series of work based on old English folklore sayings from a time when we were more closely linked to nature and weather, and that are now largely becoming forgotten. This work will be displayed in an exhibition in the Sam Scorer Gallery in Lincoln in September 2018.
My wish is for people to enjoy the visual images within my work but also to learn something new - whether that is an old English saying, information about nature conservation, or interesting historical facts. I usually spend days engrossed in books or online, or drawing in museums when researching an interesting new theme for my work.
For me there is something magical about printmaking and the decisions involved in translating ideas into designs. I particularly enjoy the mindful process of cutting marks into lino, followed by inking up the block and the excitement of seeing the first print emerge from the press!
I have a degree in Textile Design from Central St Martins School of Art and experience of working in the textile and ceramic industry as a design consultant creating ranges for high street stores.
I presently run my own freelance business and have 20 years of experience as a successful creative practitioner working on numerous projects with preschool, primary and secondary schools and community groups in the East Midlands. Large scale recent projects include ‘A Myriorama for Nottinghamshire’.I also work as a freelance tutor for Leicester Print Workshop where I print my designs and take part in collaborative projects and exhibitions with other printmakers. I sell work through LPW and Cank St Gallery in Leicester.
