The 2016 Art Club of the Year Award was launched by The Artist and Leisure Painter magazines earlier this year. This newly launched contest attracted 50 entries from all over the UK, and Leicester Sketch Club was announced as the winner.

Congratulations to the Club, which also scooped the People’s Choice Award, and to Emma Fitzpatrick, Sketch Club President and Secretary, and an LSA member too, for managing their entry – the brief was for clubs to submit five selected members’ works to represent their group. The competition also took account of the club’s history, plus its programme of events.

It is pleasing to note that three of the five artists whose work was entered for the contest are LSA members. They are Scott Bridgwood, with Exit (oil), Jill Hailes, with Red Alert (acrylic) and Sue Sansome with Boats at Blakeney (pastel).

All five paintings were exhibited at the Patchings Art, Craft and Photography exhibition in Nottingham between June 9 and 12.

Artist Hazel Soan, a regular contributor to The Artist magazine and a competition judge, commented: “Leicester Sketch Club wins first prize because the five paintings entered work together perfectly as a team…they are all very different but get on well with each other, convincing me the artists in the group do the same….I would join this club! Congratulations!’’
