Do you need some help understanding how to (better) manage your business finances? This workshop aims to demystify financial management, focussing on practical examples, an understanding of process, statutory reporting and the tools available to help you.

We’ll cover topics such as budgeting (including staffing costs, and tax and national insurance for sole traders), costing goods and services, managing cash flow, and managing and recording your day to day transactions. We’ll discuss some of the standard management reports, and how to read a typical set of statutory accounts. If you’re a sole trader, we’ll cover self-assessment too.

For those who are keen to explore computerised accounts systems, there will be an introduction to double-entry bookkeeping and information on some of the systems available (including a free one for small businesses).

The workshop will be relevant to anyone who needs to gain an overview of business finances. It’s aimed primarily at business owners - freelancers (sole traders), those working in partnerships and those running limited companies – but finance staff who would like to gain a broader understanding of financial management may also find it helpful.

The course is run by Bev Shephard on behalf of Cultivate. Bev is an independent Finance, HR and Ops Director with fifteen years’ Board-level experience in the third, private and public sectors. She’s an expert in start-ups, strategy and business development. Bev delivers independent consultancy for a range of creative businesses, group and 121 training, and works on retainer with a number of small and medium sized business. She’s also an entrepreneur – having founded Haarlem creative studios and Artspace – and a volunteer trustee with the arts organisation Level, and with Derbyshire Dales CVS.
