LSA Student Award 2022 logo

About the Competition  - Win £500

LSA is delighted to announce this year’s student award - a unique and exciting competition in collaboration with Newarke Houses Museum, Leicester with an opportunity for the winning student (or group of students) to gain valuable experience to support progression from student to professional artist.

The winner will be the design-lead working with a team of knowledgeable and experienced artists learning how to run a public engagement project with the kudos of exhibiting alongside Leicestershire’s most acclaimed artists in their prestigious annual exhibition at Newarke Houses Museum.

Entry to the competition is free.

In line with many public art competitions and proposals, we are asking applicants to design a 2D piece of artwork in response to the Newarke Houses Museum permanent exhibition. ‘From Kampala to Leicester’.  2022 marks the 50th Anniversary of a significant moment in Leicester’s social history when several thousand Ugandan Asian refugees arrived in the City having been abruptly ejected from their homes by Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin.  A new exhibition 'Uganda 50' is also due to open in July at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery.

Your design will highlight the plight of refugees and asylum seekers anywhere in the modern world displaced by war, famine, and persecution. The completed 2D artwork will be approximately 100 cm x 80 cm.

The successful applicant will be required to oversee the design work from conception to completion by attending three public engagement workshops arranged by LSA in conjunction with local charities or community groups.  The design concept and completed artwork will be exhibited and showcased at Newarke Houses Museum from 4 November - 18 December 2022.

Who can apply? The LSA Student Award is open to students (or a group of students) in full or part time education studying art or design on a foundation or degree course at a college or university in Leicester, Leicestershire, or Rutland in 2022.
