Over the past few years I have become particularly interested in how painting and printmaking can inform one another, and how these two techniques can be used together.
I often begin by responding to a subject through printmaking, identifying relevant shapes, negative spaces, colours and lines. Ideas for a composition develop gradually. As I make selections from these printed resources I layer the papers onto a solid support, and add painted passages as required. The finished work is sealed and varnished before being presented in a contemporary float frame.
Some of the pieces shown here are from a recent project looking at Leicester’s industrial heritage, where I took inspiration from the vintage typewriters once made in the city.
I left a career in scientific software design to study Fine Art as a mature student at Loughborough University. In addition to developing my practice I enjoy sharing my skills and lead small group workshops across the region. I have also worked with Foundation, A level and GCSE students and recently was Artist in Residence at the Northampton Primary Academy Trust.
