Marijke Van der Veen mostly works in soapstone, sculpting simple, stylised forms rather than being concerned with figurative accuracy. She often aims to convey a certain emotional state, a mood, or a state of being. Soapstone comes in irregular shaped blocks and in different colours and their shape and colour often help her decide on the form and topic of each piece.
