Over time I have developed a way of working that ensures that I rarely struggle to think, what shall I paint next? I know what interests me and whilst on my travels I make visual notes, take photographs and plan compositions in my sketch book.

Pathways, dwellings, shapes and shadows attract my attention. Light cutting across red brick or whitewash, a large bright cloud with mauve under light, distant hedgerows and water reflections all these motifs offer exciting potential for a painting in oil.

I consider myself to be an intuitive painter, but I find that sound drawing and composition planning allows me more freedom to paint. I am also aware that a risk taken with paint can result in a bigger gain!

I love the materials and tools of an artist and get a great deal of pleasure just playing with paint! Oil and watercolour are my preferred media, although I also use acrylic paint and water soluble pencils.
