This introduction to woodblock printing workshop will be led by artist Sumiko Eadon.

The setting of St Mary's Church, with its adjacent woodland trail, provides a delightful backdrop for the Down to Earth project. This is an ongoing programme of creative activities which aim to help you connect with the natural woodland environment through the visual arts.

Sumiko Eadon is originally from Japan, and started printmaking in the year 2000 with Japanese woodcut printing and then wood engraving. She completed a fine art degree at Loughborough University where she learnt various printmaking techniques, and since graduation she has been working as an artist and printmaking tutor.

Wood invites human contact through its warmth, tactility and the evocative smell as you cut through it in the woodcut process. Working with wood provides a real sense of connecting back to the earth.

Taking a woodland theme of your choice (birds, acorns, leaves etc), Sumiko will show you a method of woodblock printing. You will be shown how to incise your image onto a Japanese plywood block; ink up the image using block printing ink and roller, and then print your image onto paper. The block will be yours to take home.

All materials are provided and the workshop is both suitable for beginners and more experienced artists wishing to explore something different.
