Artist Jacqui Gallon would love to share with you her enthusiasm for a form of painting known as  “matter painting” which emerged in the 1940s/50s. The term refers to the technique of using thick impasto paint into which other materials such as sand, soil, mud, cement and shells have been added. One of her biggest influences – the Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies – spoke of “letting materials speak for themselves through themselves”. Jacqui's own work responds to a love of materials, an appreciation of process, and at the same time alludes to the beauty of decay.

The setting of St Mary's Church provides a delightful backdrop and source of inspiration for this very exploratory  day which looks at using materials such as soil, leaves, bark and other found “treasures” to create very expressive and textural work. The day, which begins with a walk and forage along the woodland trail which adjoins the church, will introduce you to different techniques which enable you to respond to the site and to your “findings”. The workshop will provide a fresh take on mixed media methods whatever your current interest.

Suitable for all, from experienced artists wanting to play with and discuss new techniques to complete beginners. To book please contact Jacqui Gallon on the contacts below
