Deborah Bird is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in Leicestershire.  She holds a BA in Graphic Design from the Bath Academy of Art (1981) and an MA in Fine Art from DMU (2025). Her artist residencies include Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, and Crater Lake National Park, Oregon.

Inspiration often stems directly from the landscape and from her professional experience in graphic design and fine art. Her portfolio features four ongoing series of works: Ice and Paper Sculpture, Watercolour, Abstract Paintings, and Drawing.

ICE AND PAPER SCULPTURE

A portfolio inspired by organic structures in the landscape.

My process involves building intricate paper sculptures which are frozen and photographed either in the studio or out on location.

The photographs document ephemeral artworks designed to consider seasonal changes in the landscape, the importance of ice in the environment, and the impact of global warming.

WATERCOLOUR ABSTRACTS

‘Kerning’ is a series of abstract works that explore the relationship between design, colour and the principles of typography.

These studies in watercolour, collage and gold leaf are part of an ongoing abstract series that have evolved from my days as a student at Bath Academy of Art.  There I developed a fascination with the balance of shape and colour as an intrinsic part of the process of creative problem solving.

WATERCOLOUR LANDSCAPES

Watercolour landscapes record views of the artist's local area around Frisby on the Wreake in Leicestershire and beyond.

I aim to strike a balance with these works, capturing an impression of the landscape and the light while embracing the unpredictable qualities of watercolour.
